Leopard or wild cat? Search continues in Ludhiana’s Mattewara forest after calf goes missing

The wildlife officials intensified the search for a “leopard” in Mattewara forest of Ludhiana district, Friday, after a family residing at the periphery of the jungles claimed that their calf was taken away by the animal.

However, the wildlife officials said that they haven’t found any evidence yet of a leopard in the area and suspect that it might be a wild cat which appears like a leopard.

Range officer Pritpal Singh said that they have called an expert team from Kapurthala to ascertain if a leopard was roaming in the area. “The family has claimed that they saw the leopard taking away their calf but it seems unlikely because otherwise the leopard wouldn’t have spared the humans. It is likely that they saw a wild cat which too hunts small animals,” said the officer.

He added that a “trap camera” was being set up tonight near the spot so that it captures the animal if it comes again. “We have been searching the area for three days but nothing has been found yet. We had also set up a big cage but the animal wasn’t caught. We have found some pug marks but they are most probably of wild cat not leopard,” said the officer.

The officer said a 10-member team from Kapurthala has been called to assist the local wildlife department in locating the animal.

“Till now, we haven’t found the trace of the animal and since the wild cat also has spotted pattern on its body, the family mistook it as a leopard but we are continuing the search,” he said.
