New Zealand:

Self-service petrol pumps were shut down across New Zealand on Thursday as companies reported a leap year “software glitch” leaving motorists stranded.

In the capital, Wellington, some stations were completely closed, with forecourts deserted and signs reading “National Payment Outage – Station Unavailable” in front of customers.

Julien Leys, a spokesman for petrol chain Gull, said: “This is a national issue affecting all fuel brands and it does appear to be a software glitch on the payment provider as February 29 is a leap year. “

Gull’s rival Union Oil reported similar problems but added that “manned service stations (forecourts with shops)” were slowly returning to normal.

Another, Company Z, apologized to customers: “(We) want to reassure you that we are working closely with the third-party payment provider to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.”
