Bhubaneswar, Oct 12 (IANS) Political leaders from various parties in Odisha on Sunday urged the West Bengal government to take strict action against those involved in the gang rape of a medical student from Jaleshwar in Odisha’s Balasore district on Friday in Durgapur.
Speaking to media persons, senior BJD leader and Jaleswar MLA Ashwini Kumar Patra said, “The West Bengal government needs to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that the culprits involved in the gang rape are given strict punishment. This is a very sensitive incident and it is necessary that the culprits are given the strictest possible punishment, otherwise such incidents will lead to rapid moral degradation in the society.”
Meanwhile, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Bhakta Charan Das condemned the heinous gang rape of an Oriya girl in Durgapur. “I express deep sorrow and condemn the incident of gang rape of the Odisha student. We demand immediate arrest of all the accused and stringent punishment for them. I will direct the Odisha Pradesh Mahila Congress to take necessary steps in this regard,” Das said on Sunday.
On the other hand, senior BJP leader and Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sadangi alleged that neighboring West Bengal has become a haven for anti-social elements and terrorists. Sadangi said, “The West Bengal government has always been soft towards such elements. How many more innocent girls and medical students, who are the asset of the country, will be sacrificed? The Balasore administration is alert on this issue, and I have full faith in the Chief Minister of Odisha, who will put pressure on the West Bengal government to ensure that the victim gets justice.”
According to reports, the West Bengal Police has so far arrested four accused in the gang rape of a second year medical student of a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur in West Burdwan district.
According to the police, the student had come out of the campus for dinner with a male friend on Friday night when a group of youths riding motorcycles started following them and making lewd comments. The men allegedly chased the friend, dragged the student to a wooded area behind the campus and gang-raped her.
They also snatched away his mobile phone and threw it away. The male friend returned from the college along with others and found the injured student on the ground. He was admitted to a local hospital. Police confirmed that she was a resident of Jaleshwar in Odisha.
