BD Wong, actor best known for playing Dr. George Huang Law & Order: Special Victims Unithas issued a lengthy apology Racist comments on social media.

Wong, 65, had responded to a post by influencer Mike Holston, known online as “the real Tarzan”, in which he had the massive animal slung over his shoulders. “Name this animal… only wrong answers,” Holston, who is Black, captioned the Dec. 1 post.

In a since-deleted comment, Wong replied: “Appears to be a black man.”

Wong later addressed the comments on the threads, writing: “Everyone I made a very bad joke.

“As most people in hot water do, I removed it for damage control, but it’s there and the hurt and disappointment continues and I’m really sorry about the hurt part. So stupid, but I tried to follow the ‘only wrong answer’ sign with the wrong answer. It only succeeded in that it was super wrong. I know no one gets a free pass. I’m sorry if this #wtfbd moment tarnished any respect you had for me. Yes. And if you advocate for the internet, it’s safe for everyone.”

Several hours later, Wong said in another post: “I want to elaborate on the racist comment I posted to make it clear that I recognize responsibility for it and acknowledge how terrible it is. Trying to ‘explain’ anything is wrong, and I think it’s further breaking down people’s trust.”

The actor concluded, “Please let me expend the energy to explain that I know how wrong it is to exploit a hateful, racist sneer in a supposed sense of humor; I know better, but then again there is no excuse. I am deeply sorry for the hurt I have caused and for making light of something that hurt so deeply.”

Wong, who joined SVU in season two before moving to season 17, and most recently reprized his role as Huang after nearly 10 years in the season 27 season premiere, which aired in September.
