Ukraine gets Patriots after Trump refuses Tomahawks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has thanked Germany and Europe for the arrival of more patriots for his air defense system amid news that Donald Trump will not provide the much-awaited Tomahawks.

He shared on social media last night: “Today, we can already say that there is a good result for our air defense – there are now more patriots in Ukraine. I thank Chancellor Merz, I thank Germany, and help everyone – our agreements have been fulfilled.

“More Patriots are now in Ukraine and they are being put into operation. Of course, more systems are needed to protect key infrastructure sites and our cities throughout the territory of Ukraine, and we will continue to work to obtain them – not only with states and leaders at the political level but also directly with manufacturers of all the necessary air defense systems and missiles for them.”

New poll shows most Americans disapprove of Trump over Ukraine

A pair of new polls on Sunday show that Donald Trump and the Republican Party are failing his management of the US economy, the immigration system and other issues where the president once held a significant advantage over Democrats.

The surveys come as the federal government shutdown entered its second month this week, with no end in sight and the House of Representatives still out of session. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are very close to breaking the impasse on reopening the government, with Democrats refusing to give Republicans the votes to do so unless subsidies for health care plans passed under the Biden administration are increased.

Russian PM leaves for ‘very important’ two-day visit to China

Russia sent Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on a two-day visit to China on Monday, with the Kremlin viewing the visit as very important.

Mishustin is scheduled to meet directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, a day after meeting with the country’s Prime Minister Li Qiang, Tass news agency reported.

They are expected to discuss trade and economic ties, transport and industrial cooperation, enhanced energy partnership and expanded cooperation in advanced technology and agriculture.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the talks were “very important”, but sought to clarify whether Vladimir Putin would send messages to Xi through Mishustin.

It is the latest step in steadily deepening ties between Beijing and Moscow, after the two presidents signed a ‘no borders’ partnership in February 2022, shortly before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Since then, Moscow has turned to Beijing to mitigate the impact of Western sanctions, highlighting record bilateral trade, increased settlements in yuan and deepening energy cooperation.

A look at Tomahawk, a US cruise missile that could come in handy in the Ukraine war

Donald Trump has suggested that he is reluctant to send Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine but has not completely ruled out the possibility.

“No, not really,” Trump told reporters while flying to Washington from Palm Beach, Florida, when asked if he was considering a deal to sell the missiles. However, he said he might change his mind on missiles that could make a significant difference in the ongoing war.

axe The cruise missile has been in the US military’s inventory since the 1980s. Slow by missile standards, the cruise missile flies about 100 feet (about 30 meters) above the ground, making it difficult to detect by defense systems.

The missile also has an impressive range of about 1,000 miles and a precise guidance system that makes it a weapon to attack targets deep inland or in hostile territory.
