Kolkata, Nov 26 (IANS) The Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday caught an Indian smuggler along the India-Bangladesh Border (IBB) in North Bengal and seized gold worth about Rs 2.5 crore from him. Based on the information given by him, the previous link of this racket – a man from Maharashtra – was also arrested.
A senior officer of BSF’s North Bengal Frontier said, “Acting on specific intelligence received by Field ‘G’ Team, BSF, Kishanganj regarding smuggling of gold in the area of responsibility, the troops apprehended an Indian national named Ratan Bishra (23). He is a resident of Indira Colony, Bamanbari, Goalpokhar in North Dinajpur district.”
Bishra was caught at the IBB fence gate while returning from his farm.
When he was stopped and searched he was carrying a bundle of dry branches. Gold biscuits weighing 1,963.72 grams were found from him. Two mobile phones were also seized.
“The gold is worth around Rs 2.5 crore. Based on the information given by him, the BSF team planned another operation and arrested the link behind, namely Dhanaji Namdev Bhuje (34). He is a resident of Malewadi, Kargani, Atpari in Sangli district of Maharashtra. He was waiting at Caltex Chowk in Kishanganj to receive the consignment,” the officer said.
Both Bishra and Bhuje have been handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Behrampur, Murshidabad for further legal process.
The gold has also been handed over. BSF is considering it a big success as both the smuggler and the receiver have been caught. More suspects are possible after further investigation, the officer said.
Special Director General, BSF (Eastern Command), Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal appreciated the remarkable seizure of gold and the efforts of the troops of North Bengal Frontier in busting the gold smuggling racket. He reiterated that this achievement reflects the commitment of BSF to dismantle the gold smuggling-network/racket.
He said that BSF will continue such decisive action with zero tolerance against smuggling and illegal activities along the India-Bangladesh border.
