Mysuru, Nov 7 (IANS) Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday urged citizens to maintain an unwavering spirit of patriotism as the country completes 150 years of the iconic song Vande Mataram composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the national capital Delhi as part of a program organized to commemorate 150 years of Vande Mataram.
Union Minister Kumaraswamy participated in the program organized at the BEML unit in Mysore, which was linked to the live telecast of the Prime Minister.
The Union Minister said, “I am happy to participate in the live program of the Prime Minister.” He said that even after one and a half century, Vande Mataram remains immortal in the hearts of all Indians.
He paid tribute to the song and recalled its important role during the freedom struggle.
Union Minister Kumaraswamy said Vande Mataram had united fragmented India during the colonial era and even after 150 years, it remains the favorite song of the people.
He said, “Listening to Vande Mataram even today gives goosebumps.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a series of year-long programs to commemorate Vande Mataram. Minister Kumaraswamy called upon the youth to imbibe the ideals enshrined in this great song and nurture the spirit of patriotism.
On this occasion, HD Kumaraswamy also planted a sapling in the BEML campus and watered it.
MLA GT Harish Gowda and senior officials of the organization were present.
Meanwhile, opposition leader R. Ashok said: “Vande Mataram was not just a national song or the lifeline of the freedom movement – it was a declaration of cultural nationalism.”

Vande Mataram, written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1875, is one of India’s most enduring symbols of patriotism and unity. Originally included in his novel Anandamath, this song inspired countless freedom fighters during the freedom struggle.
Vande Mataram, celebrated for the powerful call of the motherland, holds emotional and historical significance even after 150 years.
