Bengaluru, 7 October (IANS) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced that the socio-economic and educational survey, usually known as a caste census, will be completed by 19 October.
He further announced holidays for government schools across the state to facilitate the work of calculation.
The government’s earlier deadline to complete the survey is ending today (October 7).
“By October 19, the survey work will be completed. Initially there were some technical disturbances, which are now being decided. I thank all the enumerators,” said Siddaramaiah said while addressing a press conference in Bengaluru after holding a review meeting.
He said the socio-economic and educational survey of the Karnataka population, which began on 2 September, was scheduled to end on 7 October; However, it is incomplete in many districts.
He said, “While 97 percent of the survey work has been completed in Kopal, only 67 percent has been completed in Mangaluru district, showing wide transformation across the state,” he said.
The Chief Minister said that the Education Department and the Backward Classes Commission discussed the delay, as a total of 1.2 lakh teachers and 1.6 lakh staff members are engaged in survey work.
He said that the Congress Legislative Council member Puttanna and the Teachers Association had requested 10 more days of expansion to complete the survey.
“In view of his request, the government has announced holidays for the government and aided schools till 18 October, which is accounting for eight working days,” Siddaramaiah said.
The Chief Minister said that since II PUC mid-term examinations are being conducted from October 12, lecturers of East-University colleges have been exempted from survey work.
“In the city of Bengaluru, 6,700 teachers are included in the survey. The city has 46 lakh houses, and each teacher is assigned to cover 10–15 houses per day,” he said.
Siddaramaiah has directed that the survey in Bengaluru should be completed before Naraka Chaturdashi.
“The teachers have assured that they will complete the work within the given time limit. Bengaluru has recorded only 36 percent calculation, which is low. I have spoken to all senior bureaucrats, and they have agreed that the work will be completed before Diwali,” he said.
He also announced that three teachers have died during the survey duty, and the government will provide compensation of Rs 20 lakh to its family.
“The government will take disciplinary action against those who refuse or hesitate to participate in the survey. In some areas under the Bangalore region (GBA), the survey started late due to the duties and other training programs of the Election Commission. Therefore, the rate of completion in those areas is less than anywhere else,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivkumar said that the teachers will complete the course through special classes to compensate for the holidays.
He said, “He has given it in writing, and the students will not remember anything academically,” he said.
