North Carolina-born Kshamata Skeete, 49, was an outstanding mountaineer and orthopaedic physician in the United States. She was a doctor of medicine with a focus on sports injuries and hand orthopaedics. Skeete provided care for athletes and other patients with bone, muscle, and joint ailments at Carolinas HealthCare System and Carolina Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Centre. Skeete was an enthusiastic outdoor enthusiast who frequently went on climbing adventures in her personal life. She was drawn to the excitement and allure of the world’s tallest peaks. With a summit elevation of 6,960 metres above sea level, Aconcagua in Argentina is the tallest mountain peak in both the western and southern hemispheres, where she recently completed her latest climbing expedition.
After several exhausting days of hiking and climbing, Kshamata Skeete finally reached the peak of Aconcagua on January 24, 2023. But tragedy befell her as she descended, in the Piedras Blancas region, some 5,500 metres above sea level, where she had a heart attack. Gabriel Fraccia, her guide, reported the situation right away, but attempts at resuscitation were fruitless. Skeete’s passing is the fourth climbing-related death on Aconcagua this season. Her body was probably under tremendous strain due to the high altitude and strong gusts of above 100 km/h, which led to the deadly medical emergency.

On April 5, 1974, Skeete was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Mark and Claire Skeete. She earned a B.S. in biology with honours from UNC Chapel Hill in 1996, graduating summa cum laude. After graduating from Duke University in 2000 with a medical degree, Skeete went on to specialise in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine. Skeete is renowned for her medical prowess, empathy for her patients, outdoor interest, and spirit of adventure. Friends, relatives, and coworkers all miss her terribly.
