Kolkata, Oct 17 (IANS) Kolkata Police on Friday specified the deadline for bursting of firecrackers on the occasion of Kali Puja and Diwali on October 20 and Chhath Puja on October 28.

In the notification issued by Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, during the twin festivals of Kali Puja and Diwali on October 20, two hours have been allotted for burning only green crackers, and the time limit on these dates is between 8-10 pm.

Two hours have been allotted for bursting crackers on the occasion of Chhath Puja on October 28 and the time limit for this day is between 6-8 am.

Kolkata Police has clarified that the deadline has been fixed as per the previous directions of both the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court.

The ban on bursting of noisy crackers will continue on both these days and the police will take strict action against those violating the court orders.

The use of sky lanterns and balloons has also been banned.

A senior Kolkata Police official said all police stations under all divisions of the city police have been instructed to keep a close watch on whether sound crackers or sky lantern-balloons are sold anywhere in the city.

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday questioned the practical implementation of firecracker norms in the state.

Following this, West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant held a virtual meeting with Kolkata Police Commissioners and other commissioners as well as the District Superintendent of Police.

During the meeting, the Chief Secretary directed to strictly implement firecracker rules in the state on the occasion of Kali Puja, Diwali and Chhath Puja.
