Manchester United head coach Reuben Amorim Insisted kobi menu Represents the future of the club but may have to wait for his chance to prove it.
The 20-year-old scored just one run in the defeat at Old Trafford Carabao Cup Make a total of 12 appearances this season.
Last week Amorim said the midfielder needed to “fight for his job”, but he has not had the chance to do so after suffering a calf injury in training ahead of Sunday’s defeat to Aston Villa, with seven more players missing from the squad.
But the United boss suggested he is taking a long-term approach despite the player not getting chances this season.
“Koby Manu will have opportunities all the time. He played in different positions: he can do that (defensive midfield) position, he can play if we play with three, he can play like we played in the last game – Mason Mount’s position in this game (a number 10 who drops into midfield).
“So, he’s going to be the future of Manchester United, that’s my feeling. He just needs to wait for his chance and everything can change in two days in football.”
Yet, although Amorim played down the possibility of the youngster leaving on loan in January, with his recent injury making that possibility even less likely, he tempered this by suggesting that he would need to find an adequate replacement.
“If we can’t find anyone, it’s hard to leave,” he said.
“Even with the full squad we are small (in terms of players), which can happen here, so if we don’t find a replacement it will be hard for someone to leave the club.”
The midfield is an obvious area that needs strengthening, but the transfer window is around the corner and players like Casemiro and the centre-backs Harry Maguire Out of contract in the summer (although the Brazilian has a 12-month option) there are other things to consider.
“There is no decision,” Amorim said of the pair’s contract status.
“We have a lot to do and we need to understand what is going to happen next season, because we need to understand what we are doing if there are European games.
“We have a lot to do at this moment. We’re not thinking about that. I’m really happy with them but I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
The United boss insisted he would not be disappointed if additional aid did not arrive next month.
“No. Obviously we’re struggling at the moment, but we have a plan across the club,” he said ahead of the trip to Newcastle.
“We will stick to the plan. I think if we have the opportunity to bring in a player who we think will be the future of the club, he will come.
“If not, we have Jack (Fletcher), we have Shea Lacey and in three weeks, we’ll have Amad, Nous (Mazraoui), Brian (Mbeumo). Bruno (Fernandes), Kobi Manu back. So we’ll see.”
