Seoul:
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected field training of his troops at a major military operations base in the country’s western region on Wednesday and ordered to step up war preparations, KCNA reported on Thursday.
The visit to the base, whose location has yet to be determined, comes after U.S. and South Korean troops began annual joint military exercises in South Korea on Monday, with twice as many troops participating as last year.
According to KCNA, Kim Jong-un said the military must “actively embrace a new heyday of strengthening war preparations in accordance with the requirements of the current situation.”
KCNA quoted Kim Jong-un as saying in a speech to the troops: “Our military should… steadily strengthen actual combat exercises with the aim of rapidly improving combat capabilities and achieving full combat readiness.”
KCNA did not mention whether Kim directly mentioned the drills by the U.S. and South Korean militaries. KCNA said he inspected the troops’ actual exercises under simulated actual war conditions.
