A British prisoner dubbed the “Saw Killer” has admitted to attempting to murder a guard with a shank. Matthew Tinling, 35, who is serving dual sentences for the vicious murder of an ex-soldier and knife attack on a fellow inmate, now faces an extended stint after the brutal stabbing of an officer at HMP Woodhall in 2021. Guards were escorting him back to his cell in Unit B, the prison’s specialist wing for dangerous inmates that February when he launched on Samuel Morris with the makeshift blade.
Tinling has admitted to attempted murder as the officers returned him to his cell from a workout session on prison grounds.
He will receive a sentence for the attempted murder at a later date.
The incident has prompted an outcry from the Prison Service, with a spokesman for the organisation stating they are pushing for the “strongest possible punishment”.
They said: “We do not tolerate attacks against our hardworking staff and always push for the strongest possible punishment for those involved.”
