Kiev and Lviv suffered Russian air strikes, Poland dispatched aircraft

Russia launched airstrikes on Sunday in Kiev and the Lviv region in western Ukraine, officials said, prompting neighboring Poland’s armed forces to dispatch aircraft to secure airspace near the border.

Several explosions occurred in the Ukrainian capital after air defense systems were involved in repelling the attacks, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app.

Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed about a dozen Russian-launched missiles over Kiev and near the capital, Serhiy Popko, head of the Kiev Military Administration, said in a cable message.

He said preliminary information indicated that the attack caused no casualties or significant damage.

Russia has launched attacks on Ukraine for days in what Moscow says are retaliation for attacks during Ukraine’s recent presidential election.

“On the third predawn morning this week, air alerts are on across Ukraine and have been advised to seek asylum,” U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brinker posted on X early Sunday.

“Russia continues to launch drones and missiles indiscriminately, ignoring millions of civilians and violating international law.”

The Russian Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a major attack on Lviv, Russian missiles flew close to the Polish border, Ukrainian news outlet Telegram reported.
