kiefer moore fallen down coventry With an excellent hat-trick in the second half wrexham Won 3-2 to hand first defeat in the league championship Leader.
Coventry, the only unbeaten team in the EFL, were close to a club-record seventh consecutive league win when Efron Mason-Clark brilliantly put the Sky Blues ahead midway through the first half.
The signs were not good for Wrexham as Frank Lampard’s team had scored 34 goals in 12 games before arriving in North Wales and the Red Dragons had won only one of their previous seven.
But Moore took the contest to its peak by scoring two goals in the space of nine second-half minutes, the Wales striker taking advantage of some excellent assists from Josh Windass.
Moore then took his tally for the season to nine with another assist from Windass – seven minutes from time, his superb left-footed strike was followed by his first right-footed finish and header.
Coventry made the final moments interesting as Tatsuhiro Sakamoto gave them hope from 20 yards, but Wrexham dropped to 11th in the table.
Wrexham were trying to shake off their Carabao Cup hangover after losing to Welsh rivals Cardiff at home on Tuesday and Windass wasted the first chance after seven minutes.
Coventry’s first chance was a header from Liam Kitching and Matt Grimes fired the free-kick wide.
Wrexham showed far more intensity than League One Cardiff and created promising moments.
Carl Rushworth fed a Matty James corner and Dominic Hyam hooked the ball over his shoulder for Kitching to clear in the six-yard box.
When James sent Windass into the channel to find Lewis O’Brien, Rushworth made his own save, with the goalkeeper making a good save with his legs outstretched.
Coventry took advantage of that escape to attack moments later as Wrexham lined up in front of Sakamoto and the Japanese winger provided a searching pass for Mason-Clark to sweep home on the half-volley after being found onside.
Luke Woolfenden’s looping header was turned over by Arthur Okonkwo as Coventry had more success.
Wrexham responded with Liberato Cacace unable to keep his volley down and O’Brien’s 25-yard effort was gathered safely by Rushworth.
Max Cleworth whistled at the far post as Wrexham continued to apply the pressure after the break, although the Red Dragons breathed a sigh of relief after Mason-Clark headed wide and Haji Wright was wide of the target.
The Red Dragons’ efforts were rewarded when Issa Kabor fed Windass on the right and the sliding Moore completed his cross to beat Rushworth from close range.
It got better for Wrexham nine minutes later as Windass again got the chance to take a far post cross this time and Moore headed home brilliantly as he peeled off his marker.
Moore completed his first hat-trick in more than seven years with another superb finish before Sakamoto added to the home tension late on.
