Jaipur, October 4 (IANS) Congress President Mallikrajun Kharge, Lop Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and several senior party leaders on Saturday expressed deep grief over the death of former opposition leader in Rajasthan Assembly, Rameshwar Doody.
In a post on X, Kharge described Doody’s death as “an irreparable loss” for the Congress.
“The news of the death of a senior Congress leader, the former Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, and former member of Parliament, Rameshwar Doody ji, is extremely heartbreaking. He was a leader from the ground level, who dedicated his lives to the welfare of farmers.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also mourned the death of a senior leader.
“I was very sad to hear about the demise of Mr. Rameshwar Doody. While in various positions, he always gave priority to public service and remained closely associated with the people. His struggle for the rights of farmers and underprivileged will always be remembered. I expand my contract to their family and supporters,” he said.
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot called Doody’s death “deeply sad and shocking”.
Recalling him as a committed leader, Gehlot wrote: “He honestly demonstrated every responsibility – whether as MP, MLA, or Opposition leader. A few days before his stroke, he met me, and we made the best possible arrangements for his treatment. I pray for peace to his soul and power to his family.”
Senior leader Sachin Pilot, recalling his long relationship with Doody, called his political journey “really inspiring”.
Pilot said, “From student politics to becoming district chief and later the Leader of the Opposition, he played an important role in highlighting the policies of the people of the then BJP government. He was always a strong lawyer for farmers and was deeply associated with the ground level,” Pilot said.
Rameshwar Doody died late Friday night in Bikner, after battling a prolonged illness. He was in a coma for more than two years.
Doody, a prominent Jat and farmer leader, was considered a huge person in Rajasthan politics, praised for his grassroots level, commitment to agricultural issues and specific personal style.
