Khadwani violence: Schools reopen after curfew lifted in state; more than 30 arrested so far

The main accused in the violence that broke out in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani over the demolition of an “illegally” built madrasa was arrested on Sunday. Police officials said 30 people have been arrested so far in connection with the clashes.

Meanwhile, schools were allowed to reopen after the curfew imposed by the state was lifted.

Earlier, state government officials told CNN-News18 that the main accused, Abdul Malik, was arrested in Delhi and brought to Haldwani for interrogation.

Malik was arrested along with his son and three others namely Malik, Jisan Parvez, Javed Siddiqui, Mehboob Alam and Arshad Ayub. They were accused of inciting riots, arson, damaging public property and obstructing public servants from carrying out their duties.

Javed Siddique, brother of the Socialist Party leader, was arrested after CCTV footage emerged proving his role in the riots.

  • Police said they were still scanning CCTV footage and mobile phone videos to further investigate and arrest those involved.

  • Addressing the media on Sunday evening, Nainital Senior Superintendent of Police Prahlad Meena said most of the new arrests were made within Nainital jurisdiction. She added that seven pistols and 54 rounds of ammunition, which were allegedly snatched from Bhanbhoopura station, have been recovered from the persons arrested.
  • A delegation consisting of representatives of the Ulama-India Promotion Association and the Islamic India-Promotion Association visited Haldwani. UP president Maulana Arshad Madani condemned the police action and said the report submitted by the delegation was extremely distressing.
  • Madani claimed that instead of enforcing law and order, the police “became a party against Muslims everywhere” but acted differently in cases involving others. “Discrimination between protesters (of different groups) based on religion is regrettable,” he said.
