Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 3 (IANS) The condition of 19-year-old girl Sreekutty, who was pushed from a moving train, is still critical and she is fighting for her life at the Government Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.
His heartbroken grandmother said she was shocked and devastated by the news. “We are all praying for his speedy recovery,” he said, holding back tears.
The shocking incident took place on the Kerala Express near Varkala on Sunday, when a drunken passenger allegedly pushed Sreekutty from the moving train.
The accused, identified as Suresh Kumar (48) of Panachamudu, was caught by fellow passengers and handed over to the Railway Protection Force.
According to Sreekutty’s friend Archana, who was traveling with her, the attack took place in the general compartment at around 8.45 pm.
Both were returning from Aluva after a short trip related to their studies.
Archana said the man, who appeared to be drunk, leaned on her inappropriately.
When Srikutty protested, he suddenly kicked her in the middle and threw her out of the open door.
Archana was also kicked but clung to the iron bar of the door until other passengers pulled her back inside.
The injured girl was found near Ayanti overbridge, about 1.5 km from Varkala railway station.
Since ambulances could not reach the area, he was brought to the station by MEMU train before being taken to Sree Narayana Mission Hospital and later shifted to the medical college here.
Doctors said that Sreekutty has suffered internal bleeding, but his condition remains very critical.
Police said the accused is being interrogated while the entire state is praying for the recovery of the young student.
Suresh Kumar is currently in police custody and has confessed to his crime. The police will present him in a local court here.
