Kochi, Nov 24 (IANS) Notorious thief Bunty Chor, real name Devendra Singh, was released from police custody on Monday evening after being detained overnight at Ernakulam South Railway Station.
He was taken into preventive custody from the waiting room of the station on Sunday night after police became suspicious of his presence and activities.
According to Ernakulam South Railway Police, Bunty was at the station, which was confirmed by CCTV footage.
Initially, the authorities doubted the credibility of his statements during initial interrogation and detained him for further verification.
However, after detailed inquiries, police concluded that there were no signs of suspicious activity or criminal intent.
Bunty claimed that he had come to Kochi to meet Advocate BA Aloor, explaining that there was a High Court order in his favor relating to the return of certain personal effects—money and wrist watches—which were allegedly seized by the police during his previous imprisonment.
He said he wanted legal assistance to retrieve those items.
However, Bunty told the police that it was only after reaching Ernakulam that he came to know that lawyer Aloor had passed away earlier this year.
He said he remained at the station, unsure of his next move, before being taken into custody.
After his release, he reportedly visited Aloor’s office for further guidance.
Police confirmed that Bunty currently has no active criminal case in Kerala requiring custody.
Bunty Chor, once widely feared for his ability to break into sophisticated security systems and carry out audacious thefts, gained notoriety about a decade ago.
After corroborating his claims and confirming there were no outstanding warrants, officers released him.
Police officials said they were allowed to leave only after confirming that their visit was related to legal matters and no illegal activities were involved.
Given his criminal history, his brief detention sparked public interest.
