Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 9 (IANS) A man allegedly killed his wife before jumping off the SUT hospital building in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday, resulting in her death.
Police said the husband first strangled his ailing wife to death and then jumped from the hospital building, hours after which she died on Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Jayanti and Bhasuran, residents of Karakulam.
Jayanti, a kidney patient, was admitted to the hospital on October 1 for dialysis and other treatment.
According to preliminary police findings, Bhasuran used an electric bed charging cable to strangle her in the hospital room around midnight.
After this, he jumped from the fifth floor of the hospital in an attempt to commit suicide.
Critically injured, he was shifted to the intensive care unit of the same hospital, but he died during treatment on Thursday morning.
Hospital officials immediately alerted the police, who started a full investigation.
Police said financial stress related to medical expenses appeared to be the main motive behind the tragedy.
The couple’s daughter, who was in the city, told police that her parents were struggling to afford the rising hospital costs.
His elder son lives abroad.
Relatives told investigators that Bhasuran was in severe emotional distress due to his wife’s prolonged illness, which may have led to the incident.
Police said that a clear picture will emerge after the statements of all the witnesses are recorded.
This shocking incident has taken a toll on the mental health and financial burden of families dealing with chronic illness.
Police officials said, “The exact reason will be established after a detailed investigation.”
A case of murder and unnatural death has been registered. Officials are also examining the hospital’s CCTV footage and other evidence.
The incident has sparked widespread debate on the need for stronger support systems for families under financial and emotional stress.
