Kozhikode, Oct 13 (IANS) Opposition leader VD Satheesan on Monday demanded immediate action against senior police officers and others allegedly involved in a pre-planned conspiracy to attack Congress MP Shafi Parambil during a protest in Kerala’s Kozhikode.
Speaking to the media after meeting Parambil, who was recovering from injuries sustained in police brutality, Satheesan said that the MP was deliberately targeted.
He said, “More than a thousand UDF supporters were present, yet the police stopped them, while only about fifty CPI-M supporters had to be controlled. Despite keeping the UDF group away, the officers resorted to lathi charge without any order and hit them on the head and face.”
Satheesan alleged that a grenade was thrown directly at the face of a worker by a senior officer, causing serious injuries.
He said, “The grenade should never be aimed at the crowd; for proper procedure it should be deployed in an empty area so that the smoke disperses the crowd. This is the first time that I have seen a senior officer acting like this. The police are showing more loyalty to the ruler rather than the law.”
He demanded a thorough investigation into the conspiracy behind the attack on Parambil and urged that senior officials involved be held accountable.
“Which meeting did the SP attend yesterday? Who organized the event? Who were the guest speakers? Were CPI-M police officers sent to the Sevadarshan program or the RSS program? Who authorized their deployment? Police officers are acting as if they are above the law. This cannot be allowed to happen again,” he said.
The Congress leadership in Kerala has reiterated its demand for accountability and is closely monitoring the investigation, while also calling on the state government to ensure that such incidents are not repeated and that the right of citizens to protest peacefully is protected.
Meanwhile, the Congress has approached the Lok Sabha Speaker and filed a case of breach of privilege against Parambil by some Kerala Police officials.
