Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 24 (IANS) Just as suspended Congress MLA Rahul Mamkuttathil was gaining prominence in local election campaigns, fresh allegations have emerged against him, sparking a fresh political controversy.
Incidentally, the Congress had suspended Rahul from primary membership in August this year after allegations of harassment by several women came forward.
He was the first to resign from the post of President of Kerala Youth Congress.
However, fresh audio clips and WhatsApp chats have surfaced online on Monday alleging that Rahul forced a young woman to conceive and abort her pregnancy, sparking a heated debate on social media, especially on pro-CPI-M platforms.
Concerns have increased in Congress circles over the timing of the allegations.
Party workers believe the sudden re-emergence of the allegations is politically motivated, aimed at derailing Rahul’s growing influence ahead of the local body elections.
Over the past few weeks, Rahul has been very active in campaigning for the UDF candidates in Palakkad, including house visits, poster campaigns and ward-level mobilisations.
Although still under suspension, he continues to hold the post of UDF MLA and is legally allowed to campaign.
Rahul recently gained attention when he successfully intervened to stop the rejection of the nomination of a UDF candidate in Palakkad Municipality by arguing over electoral rules before the Returning Officer.
That episode briefly turned him into a local hero for UDF workers and demonstrated his relevance despite the suspension.
Rahul’s supporters argue that efforts to defame him are part of a deliberate strategy to weaken his role in the elections.
They highlight that steps taken earlier by the CPI-M and the BJP to prevent Rahul’s entry into campaign areas were abandoned under public pressure.
Party leaders, including MP VK Srikandan, have clarified that Rahul has not been expelled but only suspended, adding that there is no restriction on him supporting UDF candidates.
As the election campaign heats up, the latest controversy has cast a shadow over Rahul’s political resurgence, raising questions about whether the allegations are legal, personal or politically timely.
