Kochi, Oct 11 (IANS) In a sharp political intervention, Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and accused it of pushing a religious agenda in Kerala.
IUML is the second-largest ally of the Congress-led UDF, while the SNDP is the social wing of the powerful Hindu Ezhava community, the largest in the state.
The Hindu Nair community comes close to the Ezhava community in Kerala.
Speaking at a public event, Vellapally alleged that the Muslim League was seeking to “establish a religious state” and said political voices questioning Muslim organizations were being silenced.
He said, “The Muslim League is the child of the partition of India. Their ultimate objective is to establish a theocratic state in Kerala.”
He alleged that the Muslim League did not allow the SNDP to establish even a small educational center in Malappuram.
The Muslim League and its allies hunted down Vellapally.
Turning his attention towards the Congress, Vellappally said the party has lost its relevance and “cannot cross the Lakshman Rekha drawn by the Muslim League”.
He said the unchecked dominance of Muslim organizations reflected a broader effort to shape Kerala politics along religious lines.
He also alleged that the Ezhava community is facing political discrimination.
“Whoever rises from the Ezhava community is not allowed to move forward. Look at what was said about VS Achuthanandan, KR Gowri Amma and Pinarayi Vijayan. Achuthanandan was insulted on the basis of caste. No one questions ministers from other communities,” he said.
Vellapally also questioned why the resignations of Kerala Devaswom Minister VN Vasavan and Chief Minister Vijayan were being demanded, but not that of State Transport Minister KB Ganesh Kumar.
He concluded by saying, “There is a mentality here that does not allow Ezhavas to move forward. They do not want an Ezhava to rule here. However, Pinarayi Vijayan will come back as the Chief Minister because he is certain to win.”
