Kochi, Nov 19 (IANS) A lawyer’s statement has forced another lawyer to file a case against Tina Jose, who allegedly posted a public call on social media to ‘kill’ Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Upset by the comment, Subhash Thekkadan, a lawyer, has filed a formal complaint with the state Director General of Police, alleging that the lawyer’s remarks amount to incitement to murder and a serious threat to the democratically elected head of the state government.
The controversial comment appeared below a Facebook post related to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s participation in the local body election campaign.
Tina Jose, a former nun, reportedly commented, “At least someone should throw a bomb and eliminate him. This world which eliminated a good man like Rajiv Gandhi can do this.”
The violent and provocative nature of the lawyer’s statement led to widespread condemnation in political and social circles and calls for strict legal and moral action against him.
Amidst the growing public backlash against the former nun, the Congregation of Mothers of Carmel (CMC) moved to distance itself from Tina Jose, and clarified that she is no longer a member of the congregation.
In an official press note, the CMC said that Tina Jose’s membership had already been terminated in 2009 as per prescribed laws.
The statement further emphasized that he is no longer allowed to wear religious attire, and any statement or action taken by him is purely personal and has no connection with the CMC community.
The CMC said it strongly dissociates itself from any comments that promote violence or demean the dignity of public office.
Meanwhile, legal proceedings are likely to be taken based on the complaint submitted, and the police are expected to examine the social media evidence.
The incident has reignited discussions about the need for strict prevention against hate speech, social media accountability and calls for political violence.
