kentucky Police found about 55 pounds of disguised methamphetamine christmas gift during holidays anti-drug operations.
According to police in Jeffersontown, a suburb of Louisville, officers discovered the illegal drugs while investigating on Bluegrass Parkway on Dec. 22. Press release.
Detectives encountered Jacob Talamantes, a 23-year-old man from Nebraska, as he exited his vehicle. He reportedly tried to flee authorities but was detained by police.
A police K9 unit signals to officers that drugs are inside the vehicle when it smells a smell outside the vehicle. Police opened the suitcase and found six boxes wrapped in Christmas paper that they said contained “suspected methamphetamine.”
Photos released by police showed cardboard boxes, discarded wrapping paper and about 20 plastic bags filled with a white substance.
Talamantes said he was from Iowa and intended to traffic methamphetamine, according to police.
Talamantes was arrested and charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance. Additional charges may be added as the investigation continues.
Police said Kentucky State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration assisted in the investigation.
“No amount of holiday packaging can hide the harm these drugs cause to families and communities,” Jefferson Township Police Chief Richard Sanders said in the release. “Coordinated efforts by partner agencies ensure these holiday-wrapped packages never reach the streets.”
This is not the first time such a stunt has been done.
Last December, a canadian woman She was arrested after trying to carry methamphetamine wrapped as Christmas gifts through a New Zealand airport.
