In giving a big boost to the famous craft area of Kashmir, the Government of India today approved the craft tourism village for Sonpah’s Art Treasure Trove, which is the picturesque Duthapathry in Budgam district, in total at a total cost of ₹ 10.00 crore.
The approval is with the release of the first installment of the central share of 4.50 crore by central textiles under the infrastructure and technology assistance scheme of the major National Handicraft Development Program.
The project will be implemented by handicrafts and handloom, Kashmir Department, and the Fund will be routed through India’s Central Cottage Industries Corporation.
In a press release issued here today, a spokesman of the department thanked the Central Government for approved the project and recognizing the heritage of Sonpah of Sozni Craft artisans. He said, “22 craftsmen of this village of award winners have distinguished themselves by winning many UT levels and Crafts Gur Awards.”
Famous tourist destinations of the craft tourism village, Duthapathri and Tosa Maidan of Sonpah will be placed on the route, which will provide a large window of opportunity to tourists and art lovers coming to evaluate living crafts. “As part of the project, the department will develop designer gates, murals, cultural and interactive zones such as live craft demo, display-cum-square counters, infrastructure development, community facilities and beauty enrichments such as access to market and branding.”
Highlighting the importance of craft tourism villages for nature destination like Kashmir, the spokesperson said that these works will be converted into a modern tourist center, preserving their rich cultural and craft heritage.
