Chennai, Oct 18 (IANS) Nearly three weeks after 41 people lost their lives in the tragic stampede in Karur, financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh each, announced by actor-turned-politician Vijay-led Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), has been deposited in the bank accounts of 39 bereaved families.
The incident occurred on September 27 during a TVK event in Karur, where Vijay was addressing a huge gathering. Amidst the massive gathering and chaotic gathering, 41 people, including children, were killed, and many others were injured.
The tragedy shocked the entire nation and sparked widespread criticism of the organizers’ crowd management. After the incident, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a compensation amount of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh each to the injured on behalf of the state government.
TVK promised a separate relief package of ₹20 lakh for each bereaved family and an amount of ₹2 lakh for each injured. Party sources on Saturday confirmed that the relief amount has now been deposited into the bank accounts of 39 victim families through online transfer.
However, it is reported that two families – Prithika and Chandra – are yet to receive financial assistance. Party insiders claimed that the pending cases were due to incomplete documents and assured that the remaining payments would be processed shortly.
The party’s decision to transfer the aid ahead of Vijay’s personal visit was aimed at ensuring that the affected families receive immediate assistance.
According to reports, Vijay intends to meet the affected families in Karur after the Diwali festival.
Meanwhile, the TVK leadership has instructed its workers not to celebrate Diwali celebrations in the name of the party as a mark of respect to the victims. TVK General Secretary N. In a circular issued by Anand, local authorities were directed to refrain from any public celebrations or party-branded gatherings during the festival week.
The Karur tragedy continues to cast a shadow over TVK’s public outreach programmes. While the party maintains that the stampede was an “unfortunate accident”, questions over the safety, crowd control and responsibility of the incident remain discussed in political and administrative circles.
