Chennai, Oct 13 (IANS) The AIADMK and BJP on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court order directing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the September 27 Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives, and welcomed the decision to set up a three-member committee to monitor the progress of the investigation.
In a statement on social media, the AIADMK said it based its stand on the principle affirmed by the apex court – that every citizen has the right to a fair and impartial investigation.
“Justice should not only be done but justice should also be seen to be done,” the party said.
BJP state chief Nainar Nagenthran said in a post on X that a CBI inquiry was one of the BJP’s persistent demands.
“I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Supreme Court,” he said, adding that the DMK government was trying to plant stories to shift the blame and defame the opposition parties.
He declared, “Soon the truth will come out, exposing the nefarious political motives behind such acts. The despicable persons who took the lives of innocent people to satisfy their political vendetta will face punishment without any mercy.”
Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan also welcomed the decision, calling it “a slap on the face of the DMK government”.
In his post on Twitter, he accused the DMK of waging a “dangerous campaign” against the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).
“This verdict restores public confidence that the truth will emerge and justice will be served,” he said.
Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president GK Vasan also expressed similar sentiments, saying the court’s decision would help clear up the confusion created after the incident.
“The political functioning after the tragedy has created uncertainty in the minds of people. We had demanded a CBI inquiry to ensure that the truth comes out,” he said in a statement.
Former interim general secretary of AIADMK VK Sasikala also termed the decision as a “slap on the face” of the DMK regime.
“The truth behind the Karur stampede will soon come to light and those responsible will not escape justice,” he said.
The Supreme Court had earlier in the day transferred the investigation to the CBI and appointed a committee headed by former apex court judge Ajay Rastogi to monitor the progress of the investigation.
