Bagalkot (Karnataka), October 17 (IANS) A horrific incident of a son tying up his mother and slitting her throat after she refused to give him money to buy liquor came to light in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district on Friday.
This incident has been reported from Tulasigeri village of Bagalkot taluk. The accused has been identified as 28-year-old Venkatesh Girisagar and the victim is his 58-year-old mother Shavakka Girisagar.
According to the police, the accused tied his mother’s hands and legs, covered her mouth with a cloth and then slit her throat. The victim’s husband died a few years ago and her daughter is married and lives somewhere else. The victim and the accused son were living together in a rented house.
Venkatesh, a habitual drunkard, used to quarrel with his mother daily and often demanded money from her. On Thursday night, he returned home in an inebriated state and started fighting again, demanding money. When his mother refused, he attacked her, stuffed a cloth in her mouth, committed the crime and fled from the spot.
Neighbors later learned of the incident and informed the police. Officers from the jurisdictional Kaladgi police station reached the spot and conducted a search operation. The accused was arrested from a bar, where he was found consuming alcohol. The police have started further investigation.
Earlier, in July, a 25-year-old man had killed his mother Bhavani in Hakkimakka village of Aldur after she refused to give him money for liquor. He also allegedly set her body on fire after murder.
26-year-old Ishwar Naika was arrested for murdering his mother Padmabai by strangulation at their home. Police determined that Naika killed him during a family dispute over money.
In January, a 21-year-old man, Ramesh, strangulated his 41-year-old mother, Mahalakshmi, with a mobile charger cable during a drunken argument in Old Chandapura.
In November 2024, in Madhuranahalli village of Hassan district, a 26-year-old man, Bharat, beat his 61-year-old mother Chikkamma to death after she refused to give him money for liquor. After killing her he committed suicide.
