Bhopal, Oct 17 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar on Friday criticized the Congress-led Karnataka government’s proposal to bring in new rules to ban RSS programs in government properties, saying Congress leaders are proposing the ban only to please a select few.

He said the Congress had banned the RSS after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and then during the reign of Indira Gandhi; Therefore, they (Congress) are aware of the consequences of such a move.

Parmar told IANS, “Even during Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, the Congress tried to ban the RSS, but that did not end the organisation. Nehru said he would dissolve it, yet it survived. Later, during the Emergency, Indira Gandhi jailed RSS members, but the organization survived. The Karnataka government’s plan will not succeed.”

He said that RSS is a social organization, which is dedicated to the service of the country and banning it from participating in government programs would be a big mistake.

According to reports, the Karnataka government is set to bring a new bill titled “Regulation of Use of Government Premises and Properties Bill – 2025” in the Cabinet, which aims to curb the activities of organizations like Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in government properties.

The controversy erupted when Priyank Kharge wrote to the Chief Minister of Karnataka to ban RSS shakhas on government premises, alleging that they inculcate negative thoughts among the youth.

Karnataka IT and BT Minister Priyank Kharge has also written again to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for disciplinary action against government employees having links with RSS.

In a letter dated October 13, which was released on Thursday, Kharge cited the Karnataka Civil Services (Conduct) Rules and pointed out that government employees are barred from becoming members of any organization linked to the RSS or participating in its activities.
