PTI reported that police resorted to mild lathi charge as protesters attempted to stop other taxis from entering the airport premises. At least two people confirmed to CNBC-TV18 that passengers were able to book cabs on ride-hailing app Rapido without any difficulty.
BIAL, the company that operates the Kempegowda International Airport, said the changes have been made to ensure a safe experience for passengers and not to generate more revenue.
“These systems are standard practice at major global airports. This is not about enforcement or revenue generation. Our focus is on behavior change, safety and ensuring that pick-up zones remain available for genuine, prompt boarding. We have initiated this with comprehensive on-ground guidance, signage and coordination with cab operators,” BIAL said in a statement.
The airport operator said the free waiting time of eight minutes allotted is much higher than other international airports around the world.
