Bengaluru, Oct 10 (IANS) A complaint has been submitted to the Home Secretary and the Bengaluru Police Commissioner seeking reopening of the sensational case of planting of a bomb in the MLA’s residence in 2003 by activist Girish Mattannavar, who was at the forefront of the alleged shrine murder case against the temple authorities.
Social activist Prashant Sambargi has now filed a fresh complaint demanding reopening of the case and reinvestigation. He has also demanded to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The complainant submitted 15 videos and other documents to the authorities in support of his complaint.
It may be recalled that Mattannavar, who was then serving as a sub-inspector at Narona police station in Kalaburagi district, was alleged to have planted the bombs in Bengaluru while undergoing rifle-shooting training.
He allegedly placed four bombs in the toilet on the fifth floor of the MLAs’ house and called the police to alert them about the bombs. In the call, he reportedly claimed that the act was a crusade against corruption by politicians. Later the police arrested him and others.
The local court had acquitted Mattannavar and others in September 2016.
In his complaint, Sambargi said, “Mattannavar had issued statements in several videos claiming that he had prepared and planted the bombs. He has confessed to making the bombs. This much is clear. Despite the case being dismissed by the court, new evidence and documents coming to light require a re-investigation.”
Mattannavar had claimed that it was easy to make bombs using gelatin and other materials. The complaint requested that Mattannavar be investigated by the NIA and the bomb planted at the MLA’s house be re-investigated.
Mattannavar has demanded the arrest of Dharmadhikari and BJP Rajya Sabha member Virendra Hegde and his family members in the Dharmasthala case. He is also at the forefront among the workers in the Dharamsthal issue.
After his acquittal in the bomb case, Mattannavar entered politics and joined BJP. Later, he left the party and was involved in the movement against corruption in the state before actively participating in the movement against the Dharmasthala temple management.
The police had arrested his associates Guranna Ammapura and Girish Babu in connection with the bomb case. The trial of the bomb case lasted for 13 years and ended with the acquittal of all three men. Police said the acquittal was a result of giving benefit of doubt in the absence of evidence.
