Bengaluru, Nov 12 (IANS) Three people, including two women, have been arrested for “misusing” the advance money given to students for foreign travel. Police gave this information on Wednesday.
A complaint in this regard was lodged at Sadashivnagar police station on November 1 by an employee of a reputed institute located within the station limits, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said in a statement.
The complainant said that two women working as temporary secretarial assistants in the institute had given fake approval orders for advance money of students.
The accused allegedly edited and manipulated the approval documents, changed the bank account details of the students, and sent a total of Rs 1.94 crore (Rs 1,94,33,700) in multiple installments to the bank accounts of their relatives and acquaintances, thereby misappropriating funds of the institute and committing criminal breach of trust and fraud.
Accordingly, a case was registered at Sadashivnagar Police Station.
During the investigation, the police obtained several leads and gathered credible information from informers. On November 2, both the female accused were detained from their residences in Hesarugatta and Yeshwantpur.
Upon interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in the crime and revealed the role of a male accomplice.
Both women were produced in court on 3 November and sent to eight-day police custody.
During detailed interrogation, he confessed to committing the crime with the intention of making quick financial gains.
He further revealed that he had transferred the embezzled money to 16 different bank accounts of his relatives and friends, and used the money to buy property, gold jewelery and other valuables.
Subsequently, on November 9, a male accomplice of the third accused, a resident of Arakere, near Bannerghatta Road, was also taken into custody. During interrogation he also admitted his involvement.
He was produced in court the same day and sent to 10-day police custody.
Between November 8 and Monday, police recovered assets worth Rs 1 crore, which included: two plots of land worth around Rs 70-80 lakh, 121 grams of gold jewelery worth Rs 15 lakh, Rs 11 lakh in cash and a car worth Rs 10 lakh.
On Monday, both the female accused were presented in the court, from where they were sent to judicial custody. The third accused is in police custody and investigation is ongoing.
