according to a ReportCourt documents released Tuesday reveal the series of events leading up to the tragic incident. Miller and Mays, both armed with guns, reportedly got into an altercation with a group of people at the crowded celebration. A female friend of Mays said the conflict began when the other person questioned why Mays was looking at them.
Surveillance video captured Mays approaching the group in an aggressive manner and pointing his finger at them. As tensions escalated, Mays pulled out a gun, began chasing an unarmed man and fired. This prompted others nearby to draw their weapons, causing a chaotic exchange of fire.
In a statement to police, Mays admitted that he drew his gun first and fired, sparking the violence. He claimed the others only started shooting after he fired the first shot.
“Stupid, man. Just pulled out a gun and started shooting. I shouldn’t have done that. Just stupid,” Mays said.
However, it was Miller’s gun that fired the fatal shot, killing local DJ and mother of two Lisa Lopez-Galvan. A total of 22 people were injured in the incident, including Metz, who was being questioned by police in a hospital bed.
