Bianca Ellis, 34, of Cleveland, will be sentenced Oct. 27 by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge John Russo, choosing between life in prison with or without the chance for parole. He remains jailed on $5 million bond after being indicted by a grand jury last year.
According to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley’s office, Ellis was found guilty on Wednesday — after a weeklong trial — of nine criminal counts, including aggravated murder, aggravated assault, child endangerment and aggravated burglary, for the June 3, 2024 attack that killed Julian Wood and injured his mother.
Authorities said Ellis entered the Giant Eagle grocery store in North Olmsted armed with two knives, which he stole from the adjacent Volunteers of America thrift store. He said he saw Julian and his mother, Margot Wood, ahead and followed them into the parking lot.
The mother was about to load her groceries into her vehicle when Alice ran at them with a knife, stabbed the child twice in an attack that took less than five seconds, and then drove away. The boy died in hospital while Margot Wood was being treated for a knife wound to her shoulder. Prosecutors said she was hit when she tried to pull the boy out of the car during the attack.
Ellis’ defense attorneys had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
The child’s father, Margot Wood and Jared Wood, gave a statement to reporters after the verdict and thanked the community for its support.
“Everyone who met him, commented, sent love, we appreciate you guys so much,” Margot Wood said. “It was for him today.”
