Jorhat to Dhubri: Key seats to watch in Assam Lok Sabha polls

The three-phase Lok Sabha polls in the state will be held on April 19, April 26 and May 7

Guwahati (Assam):

The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday announced that the Lok Sabha polls for 14 seats in Assam will be held in three phases.

Among the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in the electorally important northeastern state, Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Dhubri will be the focus of the Lok Sabha elections.

Union minister and former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal is the BJP candidate from Dibrugarh, facing Assam Janata Party’s (AJP) Lullin Jyoti Gogoi (Lurin Jyoti Gogoi), an alliance of 16 local opposition groups in the state.

In Jorhat, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded sitting MP Topon Gogoi, opposite Gaurav Gogoi, the outgoing deputy leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha .

In the Muslim-dominated Dhubri constituency, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, who has been elected to the seat thrice, will fight against Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain. The BJP has left the seat to its ruling ally in the state, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which fielded Javed Islam.

The Guwahati seat will be contested by the BJP’s Bijuli Kalita Medhi and Assam Mahila Congress president Mira Barthakur Goswami) in direct competition.

In Nagaon, sitting MP Pradyut Bordoloi will contest against AIUDF candidate Aminul Islam and BJP’s Suresh Bora.

In Kaziranga, PPP MP Kamakya Prasad Thasa will face former MP Roselina Tirkey.

The BJP has fielded state transport minister Parimal Suklabaidya as Silchar MP, while MP Ranjit Dutta will contest on behalf of the BJP Sonitpur.

The three-phase Lok Sabha polling in the state will be held on April 19, April 26 and May 7.

As part of an agreement reached earlier by the ruling allies in the state, the BJP will contest 11 of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state, while the AGP will contest two seats (Barpeta and Dhubri) and the United People’s Party Liberal Party (UPPL)) One (Kokrajhar).

More than 243 crore registered voters in the state, including 121 crore women, will exercise their right to vote in the Lok Sabha polls.
