john stones He says England’s World Cup qualification is a sweet reward for overcoming the difficult times which had forced him to think about retirement.
Stone Was part of Thomas Tuchel’s team that defeated latvia 5-0 on Tuesday to secure their spot in the next summer’s tournament in North America.
The Manchester City defender recently revealed that he had considered retiring after last season was hampered by injury.
But he’s coming through the other side of that nightmare and is targeting “something special”.
Asked if it helps him overcome his struggles, he said: “It definitely does. It’s hard for me to express it.”
“The personal satisfaction of being here, the joy, the happiness, the joy of going through that difficult period, I think that’s why you do it.
“I have proven to myself that I can overcome anything when times are tough.
“It makes it more satisfying and I hope I’ll be on the plane to go next year and hopefully we can do something special.”
England They became the first European nation to qualify for the tournament after winning six out of six without conceding a goal.
Tuchel’s players, in particular, have enjoyed success in the last three games and Stones will want that upward trend to continue.
“The way we’ve done it, I’ve only been here fully in this camp, but was here partially in the last camp, and could see where it was going,” he said.
“Six clean sheets, countless goals, the style in which we have done it and the professionalism that has been set.
“How we’ve treated each game, and how we’ve performed in each game, it’s getting better and better. We’ve got to keep moving forward.
“We’re not trying to make a statement. We’re trying to build and get better.”
