Veteran batsman Joe Root became England’s most successful batsman after becoming the first batsman from his country to cross the 19,000-run mark following his unbeaten century against India on the first day of the fourth Test. After debutant fast bowler Akash Deep gave India a dream start, Root used his excellent form to bring England back into the game. With Ben Foakes, he made a partnership of 114 runs and ensured that England remained wicketless in the second session for the first time in the series. With an excellent drive, he found the boundary line to raise his bat for his 31st Test century.

With his innings of 106*, Root has now scored 19,014 runs and has become the first England batsman to do so. His closest rival is former England captain Alastair Cook who scored 15,737 runs during his illustrious career.

Root’s innings was a perfect blend of patience and aggression as he chose his moments to reach the boundary which kept the scoreboard ticking.

With his game-changing innings, Root scored his 10th Test century against India in the 52nd innings, the most by any batsman in this format.

Australia’s experienced batsman Steve Smith has nine centuries to his name against India in red ball cricket. Cricket legends Gary Sobers, Viv Richards and Ricky Ponting have eight centuries each against India.

Talking about the day’s action, at the time of stumps, England had scored 302/7 with Root and Ollie Robinson remaining unbeaten with scores of 106(226) and 31(60) respectively.

Root’s composure, playing for the first time on the tour, was on full display as Robinson stole the show with a six and a four during the final overs of the day’s play.

Root and Robinson made an unbeaten 57-run partnership, which helped England score runs at a healthy run rate. Their unbeaten partnership ensured England crossed the 300-run mark and ended the day on a high note.
