US President Joe Biden made another gaffe on Wednesday (local time) when he confused the Israeli port city of Haifa with the southern Gaza city of Rafah, Hamas’s last stronghold.
In a one-on-one interview with Nexstar Media’s Reshad Hudson, the 81-year-old president was asked how he plans to win back pro-Palestinians in the wake of Israel’s offensive against Hamas in Gaza When he was elected, he lost his temper.
“I’ve been meeting with them, number one. Number two, I made it clear that we have to dramatically increase the amount of food, water and health care that comes into Gaza. I made it clear to the Israelis – don’t move on to Haifa, that’s not …” Biden said in a widely circulated video, confusing the Israeli city with Rafah.
Israel has said it plans to attack Rafah, home to more than a million people who fled other parts of Gaza during the war. The planned move has prompted concerns among Israel’s allies, including the United States, who have warned against further action to avoid more civilian casualties.
Haifa is a popular tourist destination and is Israel’s third largest city, located in the north of the country. Haifa is just over 180 kilometers away from Rafah.
At the same time, this is not the first time Biden has made such a gaffe.
“We have the lowest inflation rate of any country in the United States,” Biden said in March of his administration’s efforts to address the country’s inflation problem.
In March, a video of Biden falsely saying the U.S. would airdrop food and supplies to “Ukraine” instead of Gaza City went viral.
In February, when asked about ongoing hostage negotiations with Israel, Biden briefly confused Hamas with the word “opposition” but quickly corrected himself.
Biden, the oldest president in the United States, will face 77-year-old Republican Donald Trump in a rematch in the 2020 election on November 5.
Despite concerns about his advanced age, Biden continues his presidential campaign and insists he is doing a good job.
