Ultra-high-gradation apple cultivation is changing the horticulture sector in Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir. The initiative initiated under centrally sponsored schemes aim to promote the production of the object and the income of double farmers.
Farmers in Thamandi block of Rajouri are facing an increase in significant income due to high quality apple production.
The change in ultra-high-density apple farming has provided employment opportunities and better livelihood options for the local poor. Farmers are being trained in modern horticulture practices, making them capable of optimizing yields and improving quality.
The program is being implemented in several blocks, including Thamandi, Dharhal, Kotrana, Budhal and Manjkot. High -tech nursery has been established in Saj and Budhal regions to support the initiative.
Abdul Razak, who is in charge of nursery equipment, reported that he grows apples, plums, walnuts and apricot plants from seeds in high -tech nursery and then plant them after grafting. He said that after the government’s initiative, people are making profit. “We have five high -tech nurseries. They are very useful because the plants are ready fast and are ready to be planted out … We have a lot of gardens here and in Mandi area too.”
Parveen Akhtar, who owns his land and plants apple orchards on it, said, “We used to first use corn in our land, but it was never fruitful. Then we were advised to plant the gardens, and from last year, we are creating good benefits. We will plant more apple orchards in the coming time.”
The horticulture department is providing necessary guidance, assistance and financial assistance to the farmers. The objective of the district administration is to bring more land under ultra-high-grading apple gardens to promote apple production in this area.
Earlier, in a major relief for apple producers across the country, including those in Himachal Pradesh, the central government has increased the minimum import price (MIP) of the apple from ₹ 50 to ₹ 80 per kg.
After approval from the Union Agriculture Minister, the revised price came into force on June 3, 2025.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state spokesperson Chetan Singh Bragata shared information during a press conference in Shimla on Friday.
He described the move as a reflection of the Modi government’s farmer- and horticulture-friendly mentality, and credited his strong political will for the decision.
Calling it a visionary and bold step, Bragta said that the increase in MIP would curb the illegal flow of foreign apples and help local producers to get a fair price for their produce. (AI)
