Srinagar, Oct 31 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Friday expressed strong concern over a social media video in the Assembly allegedly portraying him and minister Sakina Itu in a misleading manner.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that the video circulated online in the form of short reels has been deliberately distorted for cheap publicity.
Clarifying on the incident, Chaudhary told the House that he had tied Rakhi to her as a symbol of respect and brotherhood.
He said, “She’s like my sister. The gesture was purely out of affection and respect, but some people have taken it as a social media sensation.” He condemned the act as “shameful and immoral” and appealed for strict action against those responsible for making and sharing the video.
“Such mischiefs not only insult individuals but also lower the dignity of public representatives. I request that their Facebook accounts be deleted and legal action initiated,” he urged.
Many members supported the Deputy Chief Minister’s statement, saying that misuse of social media to defame MLAs has become a growing concern and needs immediate attention.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather assured the House that the issue would be looked into seriously and appropriate action would be taken against those involved.
The Union Territory Legislative Assembly began its abbreviated autumn session on October 23 and will end on Friday (October 31).
All top offices including that of the Chief Minister, Cabinet ministers, Chief Secretaries, Administrative Secretaries, Director General of Police (DGP) and some other offices will remain closed for a day in Srinagar and will function from Jammu from the first week of November.
The practice of closing top government offices between the twin capitals of Srinagar and Jammu on a six-month basis, called the ‘Darbar Move’, was reinstated by the elected government after four years.
This practice, over a century and a half old, was started by the Dogra Maharajas of Jammu and Kashmir and was stopped by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in 2021.
