organizer of Jewish The International Film Festival has been forced to postpone this year’s event cinemas in malmo, swedenSome venues reportedly refused to screen the films citing safety and security concerns.
According to its official website, the festival was scheduled to run from November 29 to December 2, with the aim of celebrating 250 years of Jewish life in Sweden.
In a statement posted on Thursday, organizers said they were “put on hold by all commercial and artistic theaters in the city”.
He said he would “pause to gather strength” before beginning the search for a suitable location, and said he had received “heartfelt” support in recent days.
Ola Tedin, one of the organizers, told Swedish broadcaster SVT that some cinemas offered safety and security concerns for their refusal because they were worried that something might happen that could endanger their staff or audiences.
In a statement on Saturday, cinema chain Filmstaden said its decision against screening films was taken in the spring.
“In this particular case, after a thorough assessment, we concluded that we cannot host the celebration due to safety concerns,” the statement said.
“Our priority is always to ensure a safe and positive experience for both our guests and employees.”
Other cinemas, as well as the Swedish culture minister, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Saturday.
The film festival was established in 2024.
