A candidate for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) in Jharkhand suddenly fell ill while chatting with friends at a paid accommodation and was rushed to a city hospital where he died after emergency treatment failed, police said on Friday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhawani Singh said the 18-year-old boy, a student of Class 12, had appeared in the recently held JEE-Mains examination and scored good marks.

Panit Roy, a resident of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, fell ill while chatting with friends in his room at a paying guest accommodation facility late Thursday night, police officials said.

He said friends let him rest for a while and called his family, but when his condition worsened, they called an ambulance and took him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

According to DSP Singh, the boy was reportedly not suffering from any major illness but he was suffering from cold and cough. He said an autopsy was being conducted at MBS Hospital in the city and the report was awaited.

The boy’s father reached Kota on Friday morning and requested that the post-mortem be postponed till the arrival of other family members, the DSP said.

The exact cause of death will be clear only after the autopsy report comes out, he added.

Addressing the media outside the mortuary on Friday afternoon, the boy’s father, Rajiv Ranjan Roy, said his son was an outstanding student who had passed the recent JEE- Mains exam and confirmed admission to IIT Bombay.

The boy’s father said his son has never suffered from any illness and talks to him every day. However, he added that he did not speak to his son on Thursday.

The boy’s father said that his son sometimes talked about the pressure of studying at the coaching academy, but he was strong and would never commit suicide.

He added that he demanded an impartial investigation to determine the true cause of his son’s death.

The boy’s father said that his son stayed in Kota for two years and performed well in the Class 11 examination of the coaching institute and was promoted to the senior class.
