According to the PTI report, those expelled include former minister Shailesh Kumar, former MLAs Shyam Bahadur Singh and Sudarshan Kumar and former MLCs Sanjay Prasad and Ranvijay Singh along with six other district level leaders.
A senior JDU leader, quoted by PTI news agency, said the disciplinary action was taken after evidence emerged that leaders were “working against the party’s officially declared candidates and other NDA alliance partners.” “They were disregarding our ideology and weakening the unity of the alliance at a crucial time,” the leader said.
The move underlines the Nitish Kumar-led party’s efforts to enforce internal discipline and present a united front within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), as Bihar heads towards a tight contest.
Voting for the 243-member Bihar Assembly will be held in two phases – November 6 and November 11 – and the counting of votes will take place on November 14.
BJP’s key ally JDU in the state is trying to maintain its hold amid a competitive political scenario filled with challenges from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-Congress opposition alliance and smaller regional outfits.
Nitish Kumar, who has been chief minister of Bihar several times, has navigated a complex political landscape over the years, switching alliances between the BJP-led NDA and opposition alliances. In the 2020 assembly elections, the JD(U) retained power as part of the NDA, but internal dissent and defections have threatened the party’s unity from time to time.
With the 2025 elections approaching, these expulsions are a strategic move to consolidate support and minimize disruptions that could impact the party’s electoral performance.
