Tokyo:
The number of babies born in Japan fell for the eighth consecutive year to a record low in 2023, preliminary government data showed on Tuesday, underscoring the daunting task the country faces in curbing population decline.
The number of births fell by 5.1% year-on-year to 758,631, while the number of marriages fell by 5.9% to 489,281. This was the first time in 90 years that it fell below 500,000, indicating that the unmarried population will further decline. Wedding birth is rare in Japan.
