Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday claimed to have picked up “suspected” over ground workers (OGWs) during a massive crackdown in Sopore tehsil of Baramulla district, while several people have been “cased” under preventive detention laws.
“Sopore police launched a massive crackdown on OGWs and terror associates and intensified preventive measures to dismantle the terror ecosystem,” a senior police officer claimed.
He further claimed that a large number of “suspicious” OGWs and supporters have been “picked up” for questioning from different areas of Sopore.
“These individuals are being intensively interrogated to trace their links, financial means and communication channels with their Pakistan-based handlers,” he claimed.
The senior officer claimed that the action is part of the police’s sustained strategy to dismantle the “terrorist ecosystem” that provides “funding”, “logistics” and “local facilitation” to active “terrorists” and “cross-border operators”.
“Several suspects have been booked under preventive detention laws and lodged in a sub-jail, while security proceedings have been initiated against others to prevent them from aiding or abetting anti-national activities,” he said.
The official said searches are underway at several suspected locations in Baramulla district, as teams work to identify and disrupt the “local support” networks of “terrorist” organisations.
He also said that the police have stepped up technical and human surveillance to keep an eye on possible “sleeper cells”, “sympathizers” and “online propagandists” attempting to radicalize youth or spread extremist material in the area.
“The ongoing action is preventive in nature and aims to protect youth from extremist influence,” he said.
The officer also stressed that operations will continue in the coming days with focused surveillance on the network of terrorist associates and handlers to ensure that elements acting at the behest of foreign handlers do not disturb peace and normalcy.
“The district-wide joint operation is being conducted in close coordination with the Indian Army and CAPF units, ensuring seamless synergy between all security forces in countering terrorism and its support structures,” he said.
