Srinagar, Nov 8 (IANS) Police on Saturday recovered an AK-47 rifle from the locker of a doctor in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Police, with the help of Joint Interrogation Center (JIC) Anantnag, seized the weapon on the college campus and detained the man for questioning, an official said.
“The doctor has been identified as Adeel Ahmed Rather, son of Abdul Majeed Rather and a resident of Qazigund, Anantnag. He was serving as a senior resident doctor at GMC Anantnag till October 24, 2024,” he said.
The officer said that an AK-47 rifle was found in the personal locker of Dr. Rather at GMC Anantnag.
“The detained doctor and the seized rifle are now in the custody of Srinagar Police,” he said.
He said that a case has been registered in connection with the recovery. The FIR includes charges under Section 7/25 of the Arms Act and Sections 13, 28, 38 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
He said, “The investigation is currently being conducted by Srinagar Police along with JIC Anantnag. The officers are focusing on interrogating the doctor to establish the circumstances and any possible motives.”
The officer stressed that Dr. Rather has been detained for further investigation and all necessary legal procedures are being followed as part of his interrogation.
“The investigation is still ongoing and any further links are being explored,” he said.
Jammu and Kashmir Police and security forces are carrying out aggressive counter-terrorism operations to target terrorists, their over ground workers (OGWs) and supporters.
