Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens hopes for a super strike in Wednesday’s 4-3 win Carabao Cup victory over wolves Will be the first of many.
The 21-year-old who re-joins the Blues borussia dortmund Summer opened his account in style, hitting a 20-yard shot with the outside of the boot that went wide of the post.
It was the goal of the game and proved vital, with Enzo Maresca’s side holding off a second-half fightback by Wolves to book a place in the quarter-finals.
The England Under-21 international told the club website: “I thought I would try and shoot because I was tired, and it went wide of the post.
“There were a lot of emotions in the celebration. Of course, I wanted to score first [in my Chelsea career]But it’s happened now and I’m thankful God That’s what I scored today, and I hope there are many more to come.
“Scoring my first goal for Chelsea felt really special, and winning the game and getting through to the next round was even better.
“I’m more than happy that we got through to the next round today – I’m really happy. My team-mates have been really good.
“They have been talking to me individually, helping me with what to do and what not to do on the pitch. Everyone has been helpful and has helped me.”
A more routine night was expected for Chelsea as they led 3–0 at half-time with goals from Andre Santos, Tyrique George and Estevao.
Wolves rallied through Tolu Arokodare and David Moeller Wolff before Gittens’ strike gave the visitors breathing room.
Wolves scored again in injury time but Wolves were unable to equalize and were eliminated from the competition.
Wolves could have easily been disappointed after their disappointing first half but Wolff says they took the performance after some honest talking.
“I think we have great character in the group,” he told the club website. “Half the time everyone looked at each other, now we are completely honest with each other.
“We can either give up or we can give everything for the fans who deserve it, for our families who have been supporting us since our birth, and also for our pride.
“In the second half we showed a lot of character, took a lot of pride in wearing the shirt.
“It probably would have been easier to give up at half-time when they made it 4-2, but we pulled together and scored another and created a few half-chances towards the end.
“So, it’s very disappointing that we couldn’t get fourth.”
