Avatar director James Cameron didn’t come up with the script of the film in a day. It turns out that at least a full year of the 13-year gap between 2009’s Avatar and 2022’s The Way of Water was spent on a script that will never see the light of day. The director of the film revealed in his recent interview that he dropped the script of Avatar 2 after a year of writing – as he was not happy with it.
According to The Times UK, James Cameron revealed that before Avatar: The Way of Water there was a complete Avatar 2 screenplay that was written and then thrown in the trash.
“When I sat down with my writers to start ‘Avatar 2’, I said we can’t do the next film until we understand why the first one did so well. The code must be broken,” Cameron said.

Cameron and his team came to the following conclusion: “All films operate on different levels. The first is the surface, which is the character, the problem, and the resolution. The second is thematic. What is the film trying to say? But ‘Avatar’ is the third level of the subconscious.” But works too. I wrote the entire script for the sequel, read it and realized it doesn’t reach level three. Boom. Start over. It took a year.”
Last year, during an appearance on The Marianne Williamson Podcast, Cameron elaborated on this third level in more detail by stating that he believes Avatar to be the highest-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office. allowed to be.
“There was also a tertiary level… a dreamlike sense of wanting to be there, to be in that place, to be in a safe place and to be where you wanted to be. Whether it was flying Be it a sense of freedom and excitement, or be it in the woods where you can smell the earth. It was a sensory thing that communicated on such a deep level. That was the spirituality of the first film,” Cameron said.
He continued, “When I sat down to write the sequel, I knew there was going to be three and eventually it turned into four, I put a bunch of writers together and said, ‘I don’t listen to anyone. Wanted new ideas or someone’s pitch until we took some time to figure out what worked on the first film, what connected and why. They wanted to talk about new stories. I said, ‘We’re just now.’ Not doing so.’ Eventually I had to threaten to fire them all because they were doing what writers do, which is to try and create new stories. I said, ‘We need to understand what the connection was and protect it. Protect that ember and that flame.'”
