JamaicaThe Prime Minister urged residents to evacuate as Hurricane Melissa began battering the island with violent gusts on Monday (October 27).

A ferocious Category 5 hurricane is set to devastate Jamaica on Tuesday, with forecasters warning it will be the most powerful storm to hit the island since records began 174 years ago.

Mandatory evacuation orders were placed in Jamaica for the seven areas of Kingston, Clarendon, St. Catherine and St. Andrew – but despite PM Andrew Holness’ appeal for people to shelter in place, some Jamaicans said they were staying put.

In Port Royal, Roy Brown told Agence France-Presse: “I’m not going. I don’t believe I can run away from death,” citing bad experiences with conditions in government shelters as his reason for not leaving.
